Interior Design Your Way to a Bright Future
by Elise B. Zito
With home improvement shows like TLC's "Trading Spaces," and ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" taking over your TV screen, it's no surprise that the field of interior design is rising on the popularity charts. And interior design extends far beyond knowing what looks good where and which colors match - even the TV show designers combine their personal tastes and creativity with technical know-how in order to create their custom designs.

Whether the space is a private home, public building, or business facility (such as a restaurant or a hotel), being a skilled and sought after interior designer involves adding your signature touch to the ideas a client brings to you. As an interior designer, not only are you expected to create environments that are pleasing to the eye, but your designs will also set the mood and atmosphere of a particular place. A seasoned specialist in interior design will never fail to leave a lasting impression.

It's not easy to secure a job in the field of interior design, considering its widespread popularity. So, with all this pressure to perform, it is essential for you to obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. Any given designer needs six years of combined education and experience within the field, including at least two years of post secondary education in design to be eligible for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam. In order to get your interior design license, which is required of designers in 22 states, you must pass this exam.

But don't let all the work deter you from pursuing a career in interior design, because the opportunities are plentiful. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 60,000 interior designers employed as of 2002, and this number is currently on the rise. So don't hesitate any longer - learn more about an exciting career in the rapidly growing industry of interior design today!
